How To Get A Job At Walmart
Scott has worked for Walmart and is familiar with their hiring process.
With how much unemployment rates have been fluctuating of late, finding a steady job can be difficult. As you may already know, retail giants like Walmart tend to do well through good times and bad. If you've never thought about applying at Walmart, you might want to reconsider. If you decide to give it a try, use the following tips to increase your chance of getting hired. Each one is discussed in more detail below.
How to Get a Job at Walmart
- Apply to More Than One Store
- Have Plenty of Availability
- Apply for as Many Jobs as You Can
- Do Well on Your Assessment Test
- Get Your Application on the Top of the Pile
- Be Persistent
- Be Prepared for Your Interview
1. Apply to More Than One Store
When filling out the application, you will be asked which store or stores you are applying to. You can apply to any Walmarts, Sam's Clubs, Neighborhood Markets, and Distribution Centers in your area (and beyond). You just have to decide for yourself how far you are willing to drive on a day-to-day basis. The more locations you are willing to work at, the more likely you will be hired at one of them.
2. Have Plenty of Availability
When applying, you will increase your chances of getting hired if you are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. This will help you get in the door. I've seen more qualified people get passed over for less qualified people because they put restrictions on their available days and hours.
Sometimes it's more beneficial for hiring managers to be able to select an inexperienced stock person with an open availability than it is to select a stock person with 10 years of experience who can only work on weekday mornings. The more flexible you are about your availability, the more likely it is that you will be hired—especially if you don't have relevant experience.
3. Apply for as Many Positions as You Can
Walmart can train you for any job they offer, so apply for all the positions you can. Don't limit yourself. The more jobs you apply for, the better your chances are of being hired for one of them. If you do have limitations, like not wanting to work around hot grease, then don't apply for a deli job, but do try to keep your limitations to a minimum.
4. Do Well on Your Assessment Test
Right after you're done filling out the application, you will be redirected to a 65-question, multiple-choice assessment test. This test, depending on your answers, will place you in "Tier 1" or "Tier 2." Walmart's Human Resources Department will only consider you for employment if you land in Tier 1.
In order to fall into the Tier 1 category, you must respond with positive answers (e.g., honesty is positive, showing up on time is positive). Some of your answer choices will be "strongly agree," while others will be "strongly disagree," depending on the phrasing of the question. Never choose any answers in the middle—always choose "strongly agree" or "strongly disagree." Walmart doesn't want to hire anybody that rides the fence. Also, if one of the answer options says something like, "speak with a manager," this is what you should choose. Deferring to your superiors in questionable situations is a positive trait.
5. Get Your Application on the Top of the Pile
The next thing you want to do is network with current employees. Go into the store and talk to the managers, cashiers, cart pushers, and stockers. Talk to anybody that might help you get a step above the other applicants. Current employees and managers may be able to get your application to the "top of the pile" if you make a good impression. A good word from a good employee can do wonders, and if you talk to a manager, they can pull your application out and put it on the top—literally.
6. Be Persistent
Once you've applied, you'll want to periodically call the Human Resources manager to find out if they've looked at your application and if they are hiring for any positions. You need to be persistent, so it's good to find out how often you should call Human Resources when you networking with current employees. Each HR manager is different, so getting a feel for the situation at the store you are applying to is a good idea.
7. Be Prepared for Your Interview
If Walmart calls you for an interview, you'll want to be prepared. You are one of three people they are interviewing for the position. That's right, Walmart interviews three people for every job opening. Hopefully, armed with this information, you'll have the advantage.
You'll be interviewed by three people at the same time—usually by two assistant managers and a department manager. Each manager will take turns asking you a question. Some of these may be multi-part questions like "Have you ever worked with a difficult person? What did you do about it? What was the outcome?" These are the types of questions you're likely to be asked, so be prepared.
If you are called for a second interview, it basically means you are hired, but they'll still want to put you through the interview process one more time. It may even be the same interviewers asking the same questions. If you made it through the first interview, you should make it through the second interview with no problems.

The assistant and Co-Managers do the hiring. Just make sure you pass the assessment and then follow up with a manager.

Retired Military man still trying to get a Walmart job in Winter Haven, FL. I've taken 2 assessment test and applied for 7 jobs. I've called the HR department 4 times to be told 'we will call you". I have two Walmart Super-centers less than 2 miles from where i live and a distribution center 20 minutes away. I went to both stores to be again told the same. This would be a great opportunity for me to work hard for a company that I frequently love to shop at. When i log into Walmart careers, the HR status is "under considered" for 5 positions in the distribution center, 2 are "no longer considered". Does anyone know any other way to get a job interview which is the next step. Email: kwallyg@gmail.com

@Jeff, here at Walmart we cannot stress enough that discrimination towards an individual regardless of their criminal record, race, religion, gender, personal preferences. Is by no means acceptable, depending on the severity of your Misdemeanor theft, you stand as much of a chance as any other applicant we recieve. A word of advice is to let the interviewers know ahead of time and if true, express how you've moved forward from that time.
